ZAP Updates - July 2026

Highlights

13 Million Runs in July

ZAP was started 13,295,706 times in July, up from 9.17 million in June - a jump of nearly 45% in a single month. Active scans very nearly doubled too, from 2.18 million to 4.37 million, and along the way ZAP raised over 3 billion alerts and sent 5.4 billion attack requests.

The number of times ZAP was started

We don’t know for certain what’s driving this, but our best guess is the same one we floated back in April: vibe coding. More people than ever are shipping AI-generated code, and more of them are running a scanner to check what came back. If that’s what’s happening, July suggests it’s still accelerating.

On 6 July we made it official: the Client Spider is now our recommended way to crawl modern, JavaScript-heavy applications, replacing the AJAX Spider. It finds more endpoints, scales far better on large apps, and - as covered last month - unlocks OWASP PTK’s passive SAST/IAST coverage for free.

The Quick Start Automated Scan tab already defaults to it, and the Docker packaged scans (zap-baseline.py / zap-full-scan.py) now default to the Client Spider in nightly and weekly releases too. The stable release update for August will also include this change.

Ongoing Work

Splitting Authentication and Verification

We’ve started separating the “verification” strategy (how ZAP checks whether a session is still authenticated) from the authentication method itself in ZAP’s core. The Context dialog will have a dedicated Verification panel, split out of the old Authentication panel, and everything will remain backwards compatible for now. This is the first step of a larger cleanup - more to come.

AI Integration - Coming Soon

Behind the scenes, a new LLM Support add-on has been getting a lot of attention this month: support for Claude alongside Gemini, Azure OpenAI, Ollama, and OpenAI Compatible providers (OpenRouter, LM Studio, etc), a tabbed chat panel, a toolbar provider switcher, and - most interestingly - integration with our MCP add-on, so the chat can call ZAP’s tools directly and show you exactly what it called and what came back.

None of this has shipped yet - the add-on is still alpha and not included in any release - but it’s a strong preview of where ZAP’s AI integration is heading. Watch for it in a future release, and for a dedicated blog post once it goes out.
